I had mentioned about Inversion of Control (IoC) in my earlier post Inversion of Control - for easy integration. In this post I will show you how you can actually make your integration easy with implementation of a mini application sample based on IoC.

Objective
The main objective of this mini tutorial is to highlight the implementation of an interface based Inversion of Control (IoC) architecture and to state how it could help in the integration and maintenance of the application.

For this mini application I will use the following set of classes

1. Dependency - This is the interface which is implementation as per my application versions progress and which will be used by the View components in my application. In other words this is my Model component in a MVC architecture
2. Dependent - This is my View component which uses the Model component to produce the results for displaying. As the name suggests the class is dependent on the Dependency implementation.
3. Injector - This is most important class in the application and which introduces the aspect of Inversion Of Control into the applications. This class can also be referred as the configurator class.
4. Finally there can a number of implementations of the Dependency interface according to the needs of the application.

Note: This mini tutorial is based on the concept of Interface based IOC. It also assumes that you import the required classed in your Classes when compiling them.

You may have witnessed some of the J2EE frameworks provide a technique to get dynamically bound plain objects by making them bind to some features of the framework outside of the plain objects. This technique is called as the IoC or Inversion of Control. If we have to know about the meaning of this term let us emphasize on what inversion depicts in aspect of implementing some features in plain objects.

Overview
Suppose I have some functionality of my J2EE application in my model which is nothing but a simple POJO. Now I want this POJO to be incorporated into a web tier which is an MVC (Model View Controller) Architecture. The last thing I would want to do is modify the source of the model, view or controller and put in some additional code which would do this integration. But suppose I choose a framework in such a way that I put what exactly is to be done by the POJO in the MVC architecture in a simple XML config file and then put the config file in the framework and the framework does the rest of the integration work. It was a movie! Yea, but this post is not its review. The title should have been silence of the blog rather!I am not sure if you have noticed something horrifying going on in this blog. No Posts for the last entire month! I am writing the posts but I am not posting them here.

Have I gone insane?
Probably not; because its sort of the plan you see :D. I am gearing up myself for the new site I am thinking for the last 2 months to jump on to. The plans are getting more strong day by day and I would continue blogging from a new place. All my written posts for this month are still waiting to see the light of the day. They are lying dormant on my hard drive and once I acquire a new domain you will be seeing a flurry of posts in a miniscule of time.

I wanted to try out the Microsoft Office online as I think this is the first time Micorsoft is giving a try out facility for its office products online. Microsoft is so much succumbed to its propreitary theory that when you try out the office online demo in your Firefox browser, you are shown the message that, the demo can only be viewed only in Internet Explorer 6.0 or later version.

In order to use Microsoft Office Live, you will need to have Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or later running on Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Microsoft Windows Server 2003. You can download the latest version of Internet Explorer from the Internet Explorer downloads page.

Keen on seeing the demo I closed down Firefox and opened it in Internet Explorer and I was shocked to see what was in front of my eyes. Just see the image and you will know what I am pointing out at. The office online was built on a Java applet! I never had expected to see a Java applet on Microsoft’s site.

Building it in Flash is understandable, since it also relies on the same propreitary theory like Microsoft but having built the Office Online on a Java applet one would expect it to run independent of the browser type, but making it exclusive only to Internet Explorer is one weird strategy that Microsoft has incorporated.

It was not a few days ago I witnessed this thing called snap preview in some websites while surfing. In the first instance I felt it was a cool concept since the preview showed up the snapshot of the actual site to which a hyperlink was pointing to. Only a mouse hover would be enough to see how the site is. I thought for a moment “Now, that’s something cool”.I thought I should try this little cool stuff in my blog. But hey, wordpress already has enabled it in my blog!

I was happy for some time until the new links I posted in my blogroll showed me the snap preview and read out “Snap queued for Capture”. It did not have a nice feeling this time.

The snap thing was now getting to look distracting since every link in my sidebar popped up a huge window to show the linked site’s preview. I wanted to disable it then and there itself. The moment I searched for some information of this snap preview enforced into the wordpress blogs, I came to know that many of the wordpress users were actually irritated by this enforcement. Lorelle has expressed her woes and it the same feeling that I am getting now. Reading her article, I can now relate to the agony that a visually impaired person can get when he is reading a site whose links have the distracting snap preview. It was only after this that I came to know that only 10% of the wordpress blogs have been targeted to this snap preview testing purpose as Matt has mentioned.

If you’re a lucky member of the beta group be sure to send in your feedback about what you think about it to help shape how/if we roll this out for everyone.

Finally if for whatever reason you dislike it, you can disable it for your blog under Presentation > Extras. If you never want to see it again anywhere in the world on any site click on the question mark in the preview box and they have a link that sets a cookie so it won’t show up anymore.

Thankfully they have made it configurable so that users can use it accordingly to their choices. I have disabled it and am I relieved to see my blog in its usual attire. Snap previews might be a bling thing for a website, but surely it can irritate in a short span of time. I don’t understand the concept behind “snap preview anywhere” or SPA as Matt calls it. Looking at a snapshot of a site isn’t going to give you any information, besides just advertising snap site in the popup and blocking the view of the page. How is this anyway useful, can somebody enlighten me here!

I would be happy if wordpress could introduce JavaScript in the hosted free blogs as Blogger does. I am desperate to try out some Ajax in my blog along with maps provided by Google. It is possible by getting a wordpress application in a separate domain but I am reluctant to move as I would lose some of my readers out here and also I would have to shell out a huge amount. I simply love WordPress and would love it even more if it would introduce JavaScript execution.

The days of the bloggers have now started to bloom. Day after day blogging is becoming as the faster and more interactive mechanism to put updated information to the web. Now people across the globe seek constantly updated information from the bloggers blogs than resorting to websites or reading magazines. This has in turn provided an incentive to the bloggers themselves as an added advantage. This not only gives continuous feedbacks from the readers but also helps them earn their living solely by the blogs themselves. Yet another advantage is that organizations come forward to the bloggers to get their products reviewed and evaluated or in terms of sponsoring the blogging activity. You may be well aware of Microsoft’s strategy of giving away free Acer Ferrari Vista powered laptops to the popular well known tech bloggers to evaluate their latest offering - Vista. There has been much hue and cry about the ethics of the bloggers opinions after this but the fact remains that blogging has taken a high leap.

Bloggers often have quandaries to make blogging effective by being creative in the presentation of the posts or creating templates which might attract more readers towards their blog. Till this time bloggers have done this by reaching the web hosts and domain providers to get their blog uploaded and then go about doing the tweaking. This was good for the ones who had some amount of knowledge of web technology. But for the ones who craved to blog but were not knowledgeable about tweaking aspects were reluctant to go for a hosted blog and stuck to the freely available ones. I have heard some of my blogger friends cursing about having to compromise the domain name with a http://blogname.hostname.com type where they have to tie the blog name with the host name.

WordPress came with a relief to this misery of the bloggers by providing them an option to have a http://blogname.com name. It has started to provide the same free hosting feature with a paid service of having a personal domain name. This was an element of surprise to me when I logged into my administration dashboard and checkout out the advanced option which said

The main part of your blog URL is its domain. An example of a domain is “wordpress.com”. You can have your blog at any domain you control, such as example.com, or set up a domain to automatically redirect visitors to your blog URL. Read more about it or just enter a domain name below and follow the prompts.

Blogger too has now come up with a similar strategy of providing a domain name which can be mapped to your existing free blog.

The first thing you’ll need to do is to choose a domain name, like mysite.com and register it. You can register domain names from any of a number of different registrars, and you can use .com, .org, .net or any other valid addresses. Remember: you only need to get the domain name; you don’t have to pay extra for hosting service.

This is a very good news indeed for the blogging community. Blogging will continue to rise and the bloggers will continue to shine even more in the coming years. And to have a personal domain name is like an icing on the cake of fame!
